Ultrasound
Ultrasound is an important, non-invasive, diagnostic test used for identifying abdominal and cardiac problems. Often more exact than an x-ray, an ultrasound uses soundwaves to create a visual imprint of the inside of your pet's body. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound-waves to produce images of your pet's internal organs. Cardiac ultrasound produces images of the heart as it is beating, giving your veterinarian a detailed view of the heart valves, and the heart muscles. Abdominal ultrasound is useful for examining the liver, spleen, pancreas and kidneys as well as detecting reproductive abnormalities.
Ultrasound is a non-invasive, stress-free procedure for your pet. No anesthesia is necessary, and a typical ultrasound procedure only takes a few minutes. Because of the depth of detail and high-quality image generated by the ultrasound, diagnoses are made quickly.
Radiology
X-rays are extremely useful in diagnosing medical and surgical problems in your pet, including tumors, foreign bodies, heart and lung diseases, gastrointestinal illnesses, fractures and joint problems. Our on-site, modern x-ray equipment provides high-quality radiographs to aid in the quick diagnosis and treatment of your pet.
Electrocardiograms
Animals, like people, can suffer from a wide variety of heart diseases. To better diagnose your pet's heart health, Valley Cottage Animal Hospital utilizes the latest veterinary technology. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are a standard, non-invasive technique for assessing cardiac pathology and function. ECGs record the electrical activity of the heart and can measure and diagnose abnormal rhythms of the heart and identify a damaged heart.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is an extremely useful diagnostic procedure that allows our veterinarians to diagnose problems occurring in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, as well as perform minimally invasive surgical procedures. Endoscopic procedures allow our veterinarians to more thoroughly examine the GI tract, including the esophagus, stomach and some areas of the intestines. Valley Cottage Animal Hospital utilizes both rigid and flexible endoscopy.
An endoscope is a tube equipped with a lighted camera, which transmits pictures to a monitor. Using the scope, the veterinarian has an up-close view of your pet's body and can better diagnose GI disorders, polyps, cancerous growths and more. The endoscope is also equipped with "channels" which allow for the use of surgical instruments such as forceps. Endoscopy is useful in removing foreign bodies (such as bones, toys, and other items) from an animal's GI tract. Using the endoscope as a guide, the veterinarian can remove these objects more quickly and easily without resorting to major surgery.
